That had been a week ago.

Jace had turned off her phone and locked her door. The bell had rung multiple times, but she didn’t answer it. The only thing she did was use her mother’s old phone to call Father Robin to let him know what transpired. He requested Jace speak to someone, but she lied and told him she was fine. She just needed some time to help her mother.

She. Just. Needed. Time.

The time she needed was days, weeks, months.

Jace didn’t reach out to Colby. Colby didn’t reach out to Jace.

Jace knew that Colby had been getting her Calculus help from Caleb, a smarter choice, Jace was sure. The woman was out of her mind, and Colby didn’t need that kind of distraction.

So why did she want it?

During the day it was easy to stay levelheaded. Wake up, get dressed, take care of her mother, go to school, go to Bible study, do homework, take care of her mother. But then night would hit and Jace wasn’t sure why, but Colby would hit at the same time. She was an addict, Jace had thought. Of course, she was addicted to Colby. Colby was everything that Jace used to be. She just wanted to go back to all of that, didn’t she?

“I thought I might find you out here. Didn’t you know this is where the bad kids hang out?” Colby asked as she made her way to Jace. Sitting down on a cool, large boulder at the mouth of the lake, Colby nudged the quiet girl.

“What can I say? I’m a horrible influence.” Jace attempted a smile but it was forced. It broke a piece of Colby like she had never felt. Jace was a fighter, but she was losing herself in the process. And Colby couldn’t do anything to help pull her back together.

What more could she do? She had a first-class ticket with her name on it back to Los Angeles. In less than a year she would be traveling the world, singing to sold out stadiums, living the life she had left for a simple year. Colby had to scoff at her own words. Simple?

But during that time what would Jace be doing? Would she be making food for her mother? Would she be brushing her hair and helping her change her clothes? Would she be Lacey or Jace that day? And would she ever be thinking about Colby?

Colby looked at Jace and swallowed against the lump in her throat. “I think you already know this but I’m leaving tomorrow.” Colby waited for Jace to respond. She didn’t say a word, just nodded in understanding. Colby released a held breath, “If this was a different world, I’d ask you to come with me.” Even though Colby knew the answer she still had hope, maybe even a little faith that maybe Jace had reconsidered. Maybe she would take Colby’s offer and allow her to take care of Jace and her mother. She watched as Jace smiled sadly out into the lake.
